Robert Allen Long (1946-2023) was fascinated by dinosaurs and fossils from a very early age. Working as a research associate for University of California, Berkeley, he lead fossil-finding expeditions to Petrified Forest National Park (PFNP). One season, they discovered what Rob called "a whopping small dinosaur," which was air-lifted in 1982 by helicopter from the Painted Desert to UC Berkeley (and became the subject -- and title -- of a documentary which can be viewed on U-Tube).
Rob is credited with naming most of the fossils and their localities within PFNP, so it was fitting that prior to his death he chose to donate his scientific library, notes, and 30,000 fossil photographs to Petrified Forest National Park. A campaign is underway to renovate and furnish a building designed by architect Richard Neutra to house Rob's donated materials as the start of a research library where paleontologists from around the world can come to study Triassic life.
Please give a gift in memory of Rob to the National Park Foundation to make the vision of a research library in PFNP a reality. All donations are tax-deductible. We encourage you to leave notes for our family.
Thank you for your support!
