Michael “Mike” Robert Zanillo of Kildeer, Illinois, passed away at home late Saturday afternoon, October 3rd, 2026, at age 72. The windows were open to the perfect autumn weather, and immediate family surrounded him.
Mike will be remembered for so much. He was a devoted husband; the best dad to two kids; a supportive son, brother, uncle, and father-in-law; and a friend, colleague, mentor, and neighbor to many. Mike loved listening to NPR, visiting local diners and dives, golfing, cross-country skiing, traveling, tinkering with house projects, and playing with his “granddog,” Roo. He had the driest sense of humor, always offering playful banter or a sarcastic joke. What many will remember most about Mike is how he cared for those near and far. Whether researching, assisting, caring, or advocating, Mike always showed up to help others navigate life's hurdles.
Although he grew up in Chicago, Mike deeply enjoyed being outdoors and connecting with nature for most of his life. He became involved with the Sierra Club in early adulthood. Mike happily took to camping and went on several trips with family and friends. As his kids grew, he took them, too, and for a while these endeavors became annual traditions. Of course, Mike also planned several memorable vacations to national parks across the country for many family members.
Then, in 2016, Mike proudly retired and swiftly took to a lifelong passion, protecting the environment, by volunteering his time with the Citizens’ Climate Lobby. In addition to hosting several local presentations and making lobbying trips to Washington, D.C., Mike eagerly traded his well-loved travel trailer and traditional car for an electric vehicle and successfully campaigned for a town-wide petition to allow solar panels.
To honor Mike’s caring legacy, we would like to raise funds for the National Park Foundation, the National Park Service's official nonprofit partner. Contributions will provide vital support to sustain landscapes, guard natural, historical, and cultural sites, and develop programming for visitors. Ultimately, and most importantly, donations will help care for the national parks for generations to come and protect Mother Nature at large.
All gifts in memory of Mike Zanillo will support the National Park Foundation.
